Feature 002 - Album Pitch Deck for ‘God Is A Black Woman’
Merlyn Wood 2024 Album Creative Direction Concept Work
In 2024 Merlyn Wood - formerly of BROCKHAMPTON - got in touch, asking for me to help work on the early design proposal for his planned forthcoming record ‘God Is A Black Woman’. I was given an initial outline, and list of wants for the Creative Direction for this project. Focus was to be placed on nature, spirituality, the female form, a science fiction influenced slant. As well as this, Merlyn was looking for a direction for potential rollout approaches for ways to market the music, including ways to incorporate short-form social media content into the promotion of new music.
Following our initial meeting, I was sent an early copy of the album to understand the soundscape, and begin to work on the pitch deck, with the music itself in mind. Several different approaches to the sci-fi aesthetic were researched, and created the basis for three potential creative direction paths, explored and given rationale within the pitch deck. Additionally, each potential design was explored with a lens of practicality in mind, making sure the approaches would each be achievable from a creative standpoint, especially given I would be working on any and all of this project remotely.
Following from this, some initial design work was undertaken to give an example of how the visuals could be presented for the album, including early logo designs and texture and effect treatments.
Finally, several ideas were pitched for key art like Singles and Album Cover, with more written rational to explain the reasoning for each type of potential artwork.
Jack Churchley is a Sydney-based Graphic Designer working in and around Music, with 5 years of experience designing for an array of artists, from International acts like Kevin Abstract and Nate Dae, to local rising talent, all across digital and and physical processes, to create uniqe artwork.
