Feature 003 - Merlyn Wood 2024 Single Covers
Single Cover Designs for Unreleased Singles from Merlyn Wood
After our initial work together, Merlyn Wood returned to work on some single cover designs, asking I use imagery he’d had made by another artist. The provided portraits were blown-out, psychedelic sci-fi edits, with bold neon colours and dark backgrounds.
For the ‘’PIG BOY’ cover, he asked that I use one of these portraits, and edit it into an American Flag. Following the initial edit, I wanted to apply similar CRT-like texturing and effects to the completed image. To achieve this, the cover was projected onto an old TV and photographed in high definition, before being taken back into Photoshop to enhance these lines and grainy details. Finally, Merlyn wanted some hand-painted type for the cover, and so many variations of the title were written out, photographed, and compiled together as options for the artist’s consideration.
For the second cover, for ‘EATER’, Merlyn wanted to once again use the pre-edited portraits, this time positioning the artist himself within a mouth, bordered by a pair of lips. After the initial design was compiled in Photoshop, Merlyn came back dissatisfied with the portrait, and requested a new one be worked on and used in it’s place. A new portrait was created in line with those supplied edits, and the same CRT texturing process was applied, followed by a series of painted title options offered to Merlyn.
