Feature 008 - ‘Pure Imagination’ Album Design
Lukaz’s Sophmore Album ‘Pure Imagination’
I had the pleasure to work with independent artist Lukaz for the creation of artwork for their second album ‘Pure Imagination’, providing a desired visual direction including key photography, and colour palette for the look of the albums cover. Other than that, the project was fairly hands-free, allowing for an extended process of experimentation with mixed media, exploring ways to characterise and distort the provided portrait for the cover.
Initially the directed yellow colour was applied directly onto the portrait, and used as the basis for more mixed media and analogue processes, printing out variations of the portrait before scribbling elements like artist name and album title as well as other various embellishments to give the cover some character and lightness agaist the striking portrait. Each version was scanned back in, and had the colours of the red marked adjusted to purple to better match with the bold yellow taking up most of the cover. The final decision was left to Lukaz, picking with the yellow-backed portrait with the simple star over their eye.
Finally, the album tracklist was designed to mimic the details and elements of the cover, with the printed textures and yellow colour palette. The dynamic layout was created as an additional, eccentric way to display the song titles, but also as a potential advertising element, to market the character and styles of the album.
